First, be sure to sign the online petition to reinstate Brooke Harris. Brooke was fired for TRYING to organize a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin’s family at the Michigan charter school for which she worked. Read more about her case by going to the Teaching Tolerance website or by watching this CNN interview. This case illustrates the need for teacher’s unions.
Next, sign the petition urging Michigan legislators to cut ties with the corporate front group the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC members, both our legislators and corporate executives, team up to write model legislation. One of their legislative successes is the “Stand Your Ground Law” that encourages the kind of wild west shootings that happened in the killing of Trayvon Martin. ALEC is for privatizing schools and other governmental services, instituting voter ID laws, and just about every other extreme right wing position out there. You should also sign the petition to encourage companies to pull their funding of ALEC. Pepsi, Coke, and Kraft have already dropped their membership! So what are you waiting for?
